State why microscopes are useful in the study of cell biology –

Microscopes are useful in science, as you can view what is going on on a microscopic level. They are useful in biology, as you can see what is going on inside a cell. They are needed so you can see things what you otherwise could not see. For example, if somebody had a condition, which nobody knew why it was happening, you could look at a regular person and see what is different in their cells. This would help, as you would be able to notice what the problem is and possibly figure out how to solve the problem.

Describe the difference between magnification and resolution.

The difference between magnification and resolution is that magnification is the ability to make small object seem larger, similar to zooming in. Resolution on the other hand is the ability to differentiate two different objects and distinguish them from each other.

Pirate Story

It’s been roughly four days since we set sail. We were aiming to arrive on Tuesday, but the storm created a big delay. We wanted to have a quick rest on Monday, but we thought it would be best to rush through, as we were passing by Somalia. Somalia was a country known for their pirates, so we wanted to avoid trouble.

We saw a ship passing by. We suspected that it was a pirate ship so we steered away. Another ship was sailing towards us, but when we   saw the people on board raise their guns, we knew that something was up. They opened fire, but it was clear that they were inexperienced. There were roughly 30 Somalian pirates on the upper deck and between all of them, they only managed to hit one of us. A few men started popping out of the ship, and what seemed like 30 pirates, turned into 100. They all started spraying and half of us were shot dead. We were down to four men, so we decided to surrender. They boarded our ship and dragged us along to their boat. One of our guys started screaming for help, so the Somalians ruthlessly killed him. They didn’t even hesitate. No we were down to three unarmed men, up against 100 pirates.

We were taken on to their ship, and a few of them jumped on to ours. By the looks of it, they were hijacking our ship and kidnapping us for ransom money. They didn’t even say a word about the money though, so we decided to believe they were just going to kill us. It also could’ve been true that they were just kidnapping us because someone ordered them to, but it seemed like they didn’t know what they were doing. What probably happened is that we were just at the wrong place at the wrong time and they just spotted us from far. It seemed that that was what happened, because they really had no idea what to do with us.

We were assassin’s and our mission was to kill Addington Charl, a high profile mercenary known for killing the president of South Africa. We needed to kill him at all costs, he was planning on killing Theresa May. Addington Charl probably found the

They tied us to the mast of the ship, but I had an escape plan. Although we were bound by rope, I knew a way out. We were assassin’s and our mission was

What are the main events and characters that most influence the power dynamics of the group in Lord of the Flies?

What are the main events and characters that most influence the power dynamics of the group in Lord of the Flies?

An aspect to the influence of power dynamics in the Lord of the Flies is Roger. The reason Roger was influential to the power dynamics because Roger was willing to do work that Jack wouldn’t have been able to do. On page 201, it says ‘High overhead, Roger, with a sense of delirious abandonment, leaned all his weight on the lever’. The lever caused a boulder to descend onto Piggy, which caused his death. The words delirious abandonment create the affect that Roger has had a bad upbringing and that is the reason why Roger kills Piggy. Of course, most of the readers will hate Roger by now, as he is killing a vital character in the story. This made Roger’s power unparalleled, as no one else would be amenable to do execute murder. Without Roger, Jack would have to force the mob mentality, which could eventually get oversaturated to the point whereat least one person would either get disinterested or would figure out that Jack is just utilizing the hunters as tools and not as beings. William Golding’s objective was to have a slow build up in character for Roger, and he also foreshadowed the fact that Roger might kill someone or turn out somewhat violent. He does this when it says ‘Roger stooped, picked up a stone, aimed, and threw it at Henry— threw it to miss’. Although he was aiming to miss, he was still doing this to a littleun, which most people would find horrible to do. If he was heartless enough to hurt a littleun, he probably wouldn’t mind inflicting pain onto someone of his own age.

An important side character was a nameless littleun, who was not important himself, but instilled the idea of the beast. This littleun told Piggy about the beast initially, which is why he is crucial to the story. The beast is one of the main reasons why Jack rose to power, so he indirectly was one of the causes of the anarchy on the island. Piggy says on page 34 “He wants to know what you’re going to do about the snake-thing”. This is evidence that the boy was a bit unsure if the beast was real, which is why he doesn’t say it to Ralph directly. He also is indecisive about what the beast is,as it says snake thing on this page , which gives Jack a way to turn it into anything he wants. On page 177 Jack says “he came disguised. He may come again even though we gave him the head of our kill to eat”. When he says this he his implying that the beast can change forms and that he once turned into Simon,so it was the right thing to kill him.

Ralph is a central character to the plot of the Lord of the Flies. At the start of the story, it is one sided and Ralph manages to maintain hold of the power. The reason being is because Jack was satisfied with the amount of power which he had. Later on though, Jack starts to focus more on the surviving and living a luxurious life, rather than getting rescued. This clashes with Ralph’s ideals, as he wanted to get rescued as soon as possible. On page 74 Ralph says “There was a ship. Out there. You said you’d keep the fire going and you let it out!”. Even from that line of dialogue you can tell that Ralph is frustrated, but William Golding added more detail when it says how Ralph’s fists were clenched, which tells us that Ralph would be ready to fight Jack. At this instance, most people would expect the power to go towards Ralph because of Jack’s mistake, but it actually leans more to Jack’s side. The reason being is that by expressing how he was angry at Jack, he was actually indirectly saying this to everyone who was with him as well. Considering the fact that everyone was with Jack, they would probably feel a bit offended, especially since they believed that they have accomplished something by killing the pig. This would cause a little bit of hate aimed at Ralph, which would in turn cause the rise of power for Jack.

From my point of view, the most important factor to the changes in power dynamics is the Jack. If he ever lost power, he could use the group of hunters to rule over the island by fear. The group are easily manipulated by a mob mentality and Jack takes advantage of it when he creates chants for the group to get into the mood. He gets all the hunters to say “Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood”. This is very efficacious use of language and makes Jack very prominent in the changing of power dynamics, as he can get all the hunters to comport to committing murder in order for him to gain authority. The perfidiousness of Jack also assisted his rise to power, as the gain of Ralph’s trust should have meant that he would be willing to spare Ralph and perhaps join Ralph in his attempts to get extricated from the dangers of the island. Golding’s intention when making Jack as a character were to create a power hungry tyrant who’s main goal was to reign over the island as a king.

In conclusion, I think that the power dynamics were mainly in the hands of Jack and Ralph, as they were the two main competitors. Jack’s previous status as choir leader created a good start, so he already had the upper hand, which was an advantage to have.

Essay

By Yusuf & Daian

Our topic is about the Middle East and why it is influential. Our four sub-questions explore how oil and religion plays a big part in the Middle East’s power.

One of our sub-questions is ‘How does Isis manipulate religion in their favour?’. It is common knowledge that they follow an extreme version of Islam, which they may use to control naive Muslims. This is a problem because they can bomb countries and wait for them to fight back. Then when there are Syrian casualties, they will use them to their advantage and gather them for revenge on the warring countries. A factor of ISIS’ power is how they attack countries, which have people from all sorts of different religions. This stirs up racist minds to attack innocent Muslims, which gives an unjust reason for extremists to fight back in the form of ISIS. Isis takes advantage of troubled Syrians and use them as their main source of power.

Islam plays a large role in the influence of the Middle East. For example, one prominent Middle Eastern country, Saudi Arabia, holds the two holiest cities in Islam, Makkah and Medina. The rest of the Middle East also holds a certain connection to Islam as all of the countries in the Middle East and most in North Africa were once part of the Islamic Caliphates. However, Saudi Arabia plays the largest role, not only to the rest of the Middle East but to most of the world considering how sparse the Islamic populations are. For example, Muslims from Europe, to name one continent, flock to Saudi Arabia annually for Hajj. This means that Saudi Arabia has large influence over a lot of Muslims. Furthermore, the King of Saudi Arabia, King Salman of the House of Saud holds the title Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques which suggests that the Royal Family and the King holds the power to repair and expand the Two Holy Mosques in Makkah and Medina. This is related to Saudi Arabia’s influence because the Royal Family is directly connected to politics as Saudi Arabia is an absolute monarchy. This links back to the sub-question of how Islam plays a big part in the influence of the Middle East because as Saudi Arabia holds the two holiest cities in Islam, they wield a lot of influence over a lot of Muslims so this is how the Middle East is influential explained by our sub-question.

Oil has always had an important part in our industrialised world and the Middle East is like a bountiful bowl of fruit when it comes to the amount of oil it has. Oil is, however, heavily contested so some wars have erupted concerning oil which has come to be known as ‘oil wars.’ This leads onto another one of our sub-questions, ‘How may oil be used as a reason for war?’ Oil has damaging as well as empowering elements, for example, an oil rig can be bombed which would severely damage a country’s economy and the oil can also be used to improve an economy. One example of this is the Gulf Wars, where the US bombed oil rigs in order to weaken Iraq. However, this oil spill also severely damaged the climate. Also, another prominent example of an oil war is the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s. One side-goal of the Iraq’s was to capture Iranian oil fields for their own benefit. These wars shows how valuable oil is and what a position the Middle East is in. However, this shows that if an oil-rich, Middle Eastern country were to lose stability it’s likely that a Western Power would intervene and take the oil. However, the Middle East has been and will most likely continue to pursue diplomatic relations as an alternative to war to spread their oil. This all links back to our sub-question of how oil may be used for war and how Middle Eastern countries use diplomacy in order to avoid it.

Another point on oil, oil has increased the influence of the Middle East, which brings us into our sub-question, “How has oil increased the influence of the Middle East?” Countries which have vast quantities of oil, especially in the Middle East. One prominent example of the power and influence that the Middle East’s oil contains is the severe consequences of what happens when one of these countries boycott another country of oil. The example we were talking about is when Saudi Arabia boycotted all countries supporting Israel in a war. A barrel which cost $50 rose to be around $560 per barrel. This shows the shear influence and power of countries in the Middle East who have large quantities of oil within their belt. In the future, the Middle East might be able to manipulate other nations on the basis of oil. For example, in the current Saudi-Houthi conflict the Saudi’s can easily buy more arms to use against the Houthi’s in Yemen by selling more oil. Also, countries with human rights abuses could make nations overlook them by selling oil, like what Saudi Arabia is doing. This is how The Middle East is able to use oil in order to levy influence and power.

In conclusion, linking back to our main question, “Why is the Middle East influential?” our sub-questions have answered this sufficiently. To herald back to one of our sub-questions, “How does the Middle East use Islam to maintain power,” we proved that the Middle East wields huge amounts of influence on over a billion Muslims because Saudi Arabia holds the two Holiest Cities in Islam; Makkah and Medina. Summarising our main question, the Middle East uses oil, religion and controversially terrorist groups in order to maintain power in the region and world wide. The Middle East greatly benefits our economies as well as having our economies to the neck as one decision to boycott the West would result in definite financial collapse. This means that the Middle East not only has huge influence in the Middle East but also around the world.

Questions

Main question:

How is the middle east influential?

Sub questions:

How may oil be used as a reason for war?

How does Saudi Arabia wield power?

How has the need for oil elevated the Middle East’s position in the world?

How does religion play a part in the Middle East’s power?

Why Can Napoleon Maintain His Power in Animal Farm

Power is maintained by Napoleon through many different methods. In my opinion, the most effective way is through intimidation. The reason I believe this is true is because after he kidnapped the dogs, everyone followed his lead. Napoleon wouldn’t have been leader on his own if it weren’t for the dogs. If the dogs weren’t there, Snowball wouldn’t have been exiled out, as he wouldn’t have been scared out. “They dashed straight for Snowball”. That quote tells us that they were the enforcers of Animal Farm and that Napoleon was in charge of them, as the sentences before say that he let out a loud whimper. This is related to the modern world because if someone has a huge following, they have the power to change the world for the better or for the worst. That is why I believe intimidation was one of the main ways of maintaining power over everyone else.

The second reason how Napoleon keeps power is that he us very cunning and sly. An example of him being sly is when he blames Snowball for doing wrong. The sly part us the evidence he provides against Snowball. He takes advantage of the fact that most animals were illiterate and says that Snowball was plotting against them. The evidence for this is that Snowball was apparently writing documents, which contained his plans. “He gets Squealer to say “It has all been proved by documents which he left behind him”. This caused an outburst among the animals, so that was an excellent result for Napoleon. The word “document” is useful, as it makes it seem formal and made everyone believe that they had to get vengeance on Snowball at any means necessary. His wit is one of the main reasons that he can stay above everyone else and maintain power.

After Snowball’s exile, Napoleon seemed to credit himself as a hero for defeating a villain. The truth was, he was a villain defeating a civilian. Although this was the blatant truth, all the other animals believed Napoleon was a true hero and deserved to be the leader. As he wanted to maintain his reputation as a hero, he had to try and make the Snowball’s evil acts believable. His evidence for this, as said on the first paragraph, was documents that nobody could read. That is one of the reasons why everyone believed that he was a hero, as he could find evidence against Snowball. His wrongfully assigned reputation was a significant part in keeping power in Animal Farm.

Squealer was a great asset for Napoleon to have on his side. He could supposedly turn “black into white”. This was most definitely true, as he has saved Napoleon on multiple occasions. This is demonstrated when Squealer saves Napoleon, when everybody believed that he was wrong for setting the dogs on Snowball. Squealer told the public about Snowball plotting against them and the windmill, and that sparked anger amongst the animals. Another example of Squealer protecting Napoleon is when the animals were saying that Snowball getting shot was a sign of bravery and he did it for Animal Farm. Squealer then says “That was part of the arrangement!” and “Jones’s shot only grazed him. I could show you this in his own writing, if you were able to read it.” to prove that Snowball was really on Jones’ side all that time.

To conclude with, the most successful method for Napoleon to maintain power was having Squealer by his side, as this was consistently what he used when he felt that the animals were catching on to his plans. Squealer would always refer to the seven commandments, as nobody else could read what it actually says.
